Today it rained
And millions of earthworms,
Squirming, helpless-- limbless,
Were condemned to a tragic death . . .
Torn from their earthworm holes
And swept to the sidewalk
Only to be crushed
By careless feet;
Their tiny carcasses
Strewn and smushed
Against the cold, hard, pavement.
